Live Table Games and Sports Betting Propel Grand Island Casino to Third-Best Month of the Year
The Grand Island Casino and Resort had a standout month in September 2023, securing its position as the third-best month of the year in terms of revenue. Recent additions to the temporary facility, including live table games and sports betting, contributed to the success, with the complex generating $2.56 million in gross revenue.
The introduction of live table games and the partnership with Warhorse Casino to offer sports betting to Nebraskans proved to be game-changers. Table games brought in over $100,000, while sports wagering added more than $60,000 to the overall revenue.
Vince Fiala, the General Manager, acknowledged that there were challenges, particularly in communicating to bettors that no wagers could be placed on the Huskers while they played at home. Despite this hurdle, Fiala highlighted several factors contributing to the casino’s robust revenue.
“In this area of the country, college football is the biggest thing that people bet on here. NFL is pretty close after that. Right now, we have baseball playoffs going on, that’s been the third-largest thing. Popularity has been really good. Saturday, Sunday mornings are when people come out to place their bets,” explained Fiala.
Fiala also noted that guest levels tend to increase when fewer community events are happening. The addition of live table games proved to be a significant revenue booster, turning the facility into a hotspot in the last few weeks.
“Table games have really shown an increase in our revenue as well. People love to play live table games, and we are the one place in the state where you can come play live table games,” Fiala added.
As the demand for table games rises, the casino is actively recruiting for specific positions. Fiala encouraged individuals interested in dealing tables to consider joining their team.
“We are always looking for people to come in and join our team to deal tables. It is a marvelous experience, it is a great part-time job. If you have some time and you want to learn how to deal table games, please come see us.”
Looking ahead, the temporary casino is gearing up for a transformation into a permanent establishment, with construction expected to commence in October or early November. Buoyed by the positive September numbers, Fiala aims to continue the upward trend as the facility evolves into a full-scale casino and resort.
“We are very excited to have a full property with 162 hotel rooms. We will have three restaurants and we will have a lot more offerings. We will build a hotel resort destination, not just a slot house. It is a resort and destination.”
